5 tips for first-time or rusty flyers

So, finally, you are done with the air ticket booking and shopped for all the essentials that you would need at your new travel destination. Well, it is a great feeling, isn’t it? Maybe it is your first time or perhaps you have not flown in a long time, you might feel daunted till you reach your destination safely.

Here are a few helpful tips if you are a first-time flyer.

What to Pack: This is always the very first thing that you have to think about after you are done with your ticket bookings and other formalities. You are allowed to carry all your basic essentials but there are a few items that are strictly not allowed while on board. Due to the ill-fated 9/11 incident, the security measures have increased tremendously. Items that are restricted for obvious reasons are firearms and explosives, harmful chemicals, sharp objects and even any type of liquid, some airports do not allow a water bottle too. At times the airport authorities might open your luggage if they sense some issue. Eatables like pickles may not be allowed to certain countries.

Your suitcase limit: There is a limit to the weight of your luggage that is allowed. If your luggage weighs beyond a set limit, then you might have to pay extra charges. While the domestic flights set a smaller limit, international flights allow you to carry weighty luggage, but even that has a set limit. So check these limitations too before you start stuffing things in your bag.

Wear comfortable clothing and footwear: Preferably wear comfortable clothing like a casual pant and loose top and simple footwear. Avoid wearing a belt. Easy clothing not only makes your journey comfortable, but you will spend less amount of time during the security checks. Don’t wear bulky shoes that are difficult to remove during the security checks. Slip on shoes, or flip flops are the best. You will be asked to remove your belt. They will check your pocket, your wallet, phone etc.. Precisely all that you have at that moment.

Online check-in: If you are flying for the first time, please do not use the feature of online check-in. As it is you are confused about your travel and online check-in adds to it. There are many questions that you might want to ask while checking-in online and your laptop is not going to answer you. Jokes apart, online check-in is a quick way to get through, provided you are a constant flyer. But for rusty or first time flyers it is better to get to the airport, go to the airline’s division and check-in from there. It takes some time, but you know what you are doing.
Go right to your gate number: There are many stores and cafes in between the security and your gate. First timers do get distracted, but please don’t. Just go to your gate number, as most of the times the gate can change and you will not come to know till you reach there and find out. You might be wasting your time in a completely wrong terminal and need to rush through to the right gate. This would be risky as it takes time. So it is better to get to the right place, know how much more time you have left and then go around to the stores or cafes to grab a mug of refreshing coffee.
